The Central American country of Republic of Costa Rica is bordered by the Pacific Ocean to the west and south, and the Caribbean Sea to the east. True to its name which means ‘Rich Coast’, the coastlines have a variety of things to cater to the vacationers.

Along the shoreline of Costa Rica, there are numerous surf breaks offering quality waves. The year round warm water temperature makes it ideal and extremely enjoyable for surfing. Climate:
The temperate tropical climate of Costa Rica consists of two seasons — the rainy season which starts from May and lasts till early December and the dry season which starts in mid-December and lasts till April. The dry season is ideal for taking surfing vacations in the Northern Pacific Coast, and the rainy season is generally good for the Central and South Pacific Coast. The Caribbean Coast is best to surf during November to March.
Costa Rica Surf Destinations
A number of surf destinations are found in the various regional coasts of Costa Rica.
North Pacific Coast:
The Northern Pacific Coast boasts of the best surf breaks in Costa Rica. Playa Grande, Tamarindo, Playas Negra are some of the well known surf breaks. The Witch’s Rock at Playa Naranjo and Ollie’s Point at Portrero Grande are more suitable for the advanced surfers with their point breaks. Many surf scenes in the movie Endless Summer 2 had been captured at Witch’s Rock. The point break at Santa Rosa National Park can be accessed only from Playa Del Coco by a boat. Located in the Nicoya Peninsula, coastal towns like Samara, Nosara, etc are also good surfing destinations.
Central Pacific Coast:
The coastal town of Jaco, is known for its all the year round crestless waves. It is ideal for both learners as well as experienced surfers. Jaco is also famous for its party culture. Playa Hermosa is a peaceful surfing destination with higher waves than Jaco. Other destinations in this regional coast include Boca Barranca, Playa El Rey, Roca Loca, Puerto Caldera, Quepos to name a few.
South Pacific Coast:
Consistent breaks are found in the beach town of Dominical. The Osa Peninsula is home to the beaches of Cabo Matapalo, where the waves are huge. Good beach breaks are found in Drake Bay and Playa Zanduco.
Caribbean Coast:
Salsa Brava is the most popular surfing spot in the Caribbean coast and the whole of Costa Rica. This reef break with its high waves is only suitable for the experienced riders. For the beginners, gentle waves can be found at Playa Cocles. Other surf breaks which can be found in the Caribbean Coast are Cahuita, Punta Uva, Manzanillo, etc.
The beaches of Costa Rica not only offers great waves, but also have nice surf resorts, hotels, surf shops and pocket-friendly accommodations.
