At the heart of a Costa Rican Nature Preserve is the amazing Playa Grande beach of white sand with the Pacific Ocean surf rolling in.
Our Surf Camp is located in the northern Costa Rican province of Guanacaste. Near to the bustling town of Tamarindo but far enough away for peace and quiet. Our camp is less than 200 meters from the surfing beach in a region location that is rich with culture, nature, offshore winds and beach break waves breaking over white sand.
You will find wild Toucan, and Monkeys swinging from the tree near your accommodation and although a basic surf camp this is very well looked after by brothers Gerry and Patrick Gilhool, who are eager surfers.
Surfing:
Playa Grande offers very good surfing with long rides and tubes possible. It is a great beach break and when there is a swell the waves can get very good. You will not be disappointed, this is a wave rich region with miles of empty beach breaks. The water of Playa Grande is warm to very warm year round.
Playa Grande was put on the map because of the endangered Leatherback Sea Turtles that come up along the beach to lay their eggs. It is part of the Parque Nacional Marino Las Baulas and the beach is an important part of the National Park system. You can only use the beach during the day during turtle nesting and hatching season. At night during nesting and hatching season (October to May) there are National Park police patrolling the beach to make sure that poachers do not take the eggs. The eggs were traditionally used as an aphrodisiac and poachers still pose a threat to the endangered species.
By law in the evening no light is allowed to shine on the beach. This is because the turtles will not come and lay their eggs on the beach if there is light.
