Sumatra is about the size of California, and is the second largest island in the Indonesian archipelago and is formed by a longitudinal spine of mountains including 90 volcanoes. Sumatra is a wonderful and truly beautiful island with volcanoes and hot springs, lakes and rivers, rolling green foothills, plantations and wild jungle. The island boasts many reserves that protect the island's wealth of indigenous wildlife, including elephants, tigers, rhinos, orang-utans and tapirs. Sumatra is an area packed full of top quality waves. This area attracts a large volume of swell all year long with the best period being between March to November. Sumatra has been popular with travelling surfers for a long while, the once inaccessible region becomes available for everyone. There are uncrowded spots out there waiting, they are probably peeling endlessly as you are reading this. Sumatran swells are regularly 4-8ft in from March to November and 3-6ft throughout the rest of the year. Surfing Opposite:Mandiri beach is the most consistent surf beach in the southern region of Sumatra and your will find our accommodation is directly opposite one of the best of the peaks. Depending on the tide the beach can develop anything from walled up lines to hollow barrels and it is this exact spot that was featured in Surfer magazine in 2007, as a hidden secret of Sumatra.
