Peniche

The quaint fishing port of Peniche lies in the shelter of a great headland on Portugal 's rugged Atlantic coast. As late as the mid-16th century, the town was part of an 8-kilometre-wide island, although an accumulation of sand gradually joined it to the mainland to form the present peninsula.
A small area of 74.6 Km2, Peniche combines a large modern fishing harbour with a 17th century military complex that symbolizes its ancient strategic value.
Today the town is most famous for its lace-making and fishing, and of course the abundance of gorgeous beaches and surf spots. With it numerous fish restaurants, which during the summer serve up some of the tastiest sardines in Portugal .

What to see

At the water's edge on the south side of town stands the 16th-century Fortaleza , used as a prison during the repressive Salazar regime. It now contains a museum of local archaeology and crafts, incorporating former cells, solitary chambers and the visitors' grilles.
In Largo 5 de Outubro, the Church of the Misericórdia has 17th-century painted ceiling panels depicting the life of Jesus Christ and patterned azulejo glazed tiles from the same period. There are also frequent festivals and markets offering the opportunity to buy goods from around the world.

Nearby

A 3-km walk eastwards lies the breezy Cape Carvoeiro and the Chapel of Our Lady of Remédios, which contains 18th-century blue and white azulejo glazed tiles.

About 12 Km from Cape Carvoeiro is a small group of islands called the Berlengas. Berlenga Island itself, filled with mystery and beauty, is a nature reserve for the nesting of various species of birds and the preservation of various reptiles and other animals. You will also find there typical plants and flowers unique to Portugal . Laced with grottoes and coves, the Berlenga Islands are an hour's journey by boat from Peniche. It also has a 17th-century fort.

The Surfing in the area (detailed below):

Peniche is surrounded by ocean and by waves. Either on the south and north coast there are a lot of surf spots.

Supertubos: Considered the best wave in Portugal and one of the best in Europe . It is a fast and tubular wave which breaks on a hollow sand bank. It works best with SW swells and N, NE or NW winds. If you are an expert and like to be barrelled then this is the spot.

Molhe Leste: This is a fast, tubular right hand breaking next to a pier on a sand bottom. It needs a lot of swell to work but once it's on it is considered one of the best waves around. Works best with N or NW winds and SW swells.

Lagido: This is a famous reef break. It is a long left hand breaking on a coral reef. It is a very manoeuvrable wave with several fast and slow sessions. Works best with S, SW and SE wind and north swells. It is ideal for intermediate and advance surfers.

Cantinho: This is an outstanding wave for beginners and intermediate surfers. It is just in front of our surf base and it is the most consistent wave during the summer time. It's a left and right peak, starting slow but as it gets to the inside becomes faster. Works best with NW winds and NW swells

Meio da baia: This is a long extension of 2.5 Km of beach that starts in Peniche and ends in Baleal. It has got several surf spots breaking on neat sand banks. According to the wave size we can choose the Middle of the Bay (where the waves are higher) or Cantinho of the Bay (where the waves are smaller than The Middle of the Bay). These waves are excellent for beginners and intermediate surfers. They are soft and slow breaking ideal to improve your surfing. They work best with S, SW or SE winds and N or NW swells.

Almagreira: This is a famous spot for surfing. The foreign surfer gave it another name: “ Red Rock”. This is a long extension of beach to the north of Lagido. It has got many surf spots and it functions when the waves are smaller in Baleal area. It is a left and a right peak idea in a sand button for all levels of surfers. Functions best with S or SE winds and northern swells.

Belgas: It’s located 10 minutes walking to the north of our surf base, next to almagreira. This is one of the favourite surf spot for the school because there are many waves spread along it. You can always find a lonely wave for you. It is best with S and SE winds and N swells. The waves here are beach break type and are ideal for every type of surfers.

Surfboards:

One thing that the Surf Camp is very proud of, it's our wide variety of surfboards. We have more than 150 boards to choose from. This means that you'll not only get a surfboard appropriate for your level, but also that you'll have the opportunity to try other types of surfboards.
