Surf pioneer, Tom Morey who, among other key innovations, brought removable skeg systems to the surfing world in 1964, and Morey Boogie in 1971 announces ‘MoreyRollo™, the rolling skeg. MoreyRollos™, are tough, lightweight foiled rubberized foam wheels used instead of skegs.
“They could be made from any number of other materials; sized and shaped innumerable ways. Right now we’re simply getting the idea started”.
“In time Rollos™ could replace most of if not all surfboard skegs. Especially SUP skegs. “Picture smaller diameter yet fatter twin and tri-wheel setups on performance boards: kiteboards, sailboards, wakeboards.”, says Morey Test rider Matt Morey reduced the rolling skeg to practice Thursday, June 10, 2010.
Known Advantages
With menacing trailing edges gone, dangerous pointed tips eliminated, the surfer rides with mind more at ease. Rubber wheels instead of sharp, breakable, fiberglass impediments jutting down eliminate considerable danger and damage.
Following his first test session at Trestles, Matt reported, " Awesome! It worked GREAT! “Paddling out I rolled right over a big blob of kelp! “It felt like I was rolling in and out of turns. “I straightened off on this one wave, rolled over the rocks and right up onto the beach!”
Potential Advantages
The inventor goes on to explain, “You’ll wheel your giant awkward SUP to and from the water's edge. Wheels can be substantially thicker than skegs and still not be much of a hindrance since they relieve drag by spinning.
“Weighted Rollos™, can potentially act as flywheels; utilizing excess speed from the drop to extend glide. “With one-way side texture, like a wool buffing pad, the fibers could slick back when water flows faster than the wheel is turning; spread open and propel the board forward when the wheel turns faster than the water flow.”
“In time, Rollos™ might be motorized; perhaps solar powered. And/or, house higher speed spinning internal gyros to give stability so that, for example, a 29" wide SUP need only be 19" wide. (GOOGLE "Gyrowheel" to get the drift of this). “Maybe in time I might even be able to figure out how to roll back around and out again with the backwash”, says Matt.
The rolling skeg will not be patented
“This is one of those great ideas that come along only so often. It’s way too big for any one person or firm. You’re more than welcome to run with it; help it along. I’m simply a tiny beach on which this wave from the Sea of Creation first rolled in.”, says Morey
Rolling skeg becomes part of public domain
By virtue of this and other parallel announcement to the public, the rolling skeg automatically becomes part of the public domain, thereby eliminating anyone’s ability to patent it.
Tom explains, “Everyone is welcome to take it as far as they want with our blessings. Accordingly, this family of surfing Moreys (Tom, Marchia, Melinda, Sol, Lani, Moon, Sky, Matteson, Max, Nico, Sadie, Jade, and Dane) will have zero qualms about adapting to our own products, any improvement.
Let the good times roll!
