The result is a very distinct cultural mix with a dialect of Spanish that has been strongly shaped by its ties to the US. Perhaps the coolest thing about a Puerto Rico surf trip is its accessibility for US residents: no passport requirements, no currency exchange, and it is just a short flight from the international airports along the eastern seaboard.
