At the heart of a Costa Rican Nature Preserve is the amazing Playa Grande beach of white sand with the Pacific Ocean surf rolling in.

Owned by surfing brothers Gerry and Patrick, Playa Grande Surf Camp is located in the northern Costa Rican province of Guanacaste. Playa Grande Surf Camp is located only 75 meters from one of the best beach breaks in all of Costa Rica, with four other great beach breaks within walking distance. This beautiful beach is perfect for surfers of all levels and all types of boards. From point breaks with possible tubes to beach breaks with waves that peel off, and very few crowds, you will not be disappointed. The water of Playa Grande is warm to very warm year round, so no wetsuits are needed. It’s also great for non-surfer activities such as walking, running, playing Frisbee, Botchi ball, and exploring.

The Playa Grande Surf Camp is located in the community of Palm Beach Estates, which is part of the Las Baulas National Park. The Park supports the largest nesting colony of endangered leatherback turtles in the Pacific Ocean. It also means that Playa Grande stays pristine and natural, with no buildings located on the beach. Enjoy walking around as howler monkeys hang from the trees around the camp, iguanas wander through streets, and  leatherback turtles lay their eggs on the beach. Pick fresh fruit like bananas, coconuts, and mangos off trees and see all the exotic flowers that Costa Rica has to offer.

Surfing with PGSC:

The Surf Camp at Playa Grande Surf Camp includes 2 hours of private surf lessons daily, use of all the surf equipment, dinner every night, and private accommodation with air conditioning. Wake up in the morning with a cup of freshly brewed Costa Rican coffee, then meet up with one of our experienced surf instructors to start your surf day. Your instructor will teach you everything you need to know to start your surfing career such as learning the differences between various surfboards, which surfboard is right for you, how to wax our board; how to recognize and read waves; and how to paddle, pop-up, and ride the wave all the way to the beach.  In between surf sessions, you have the freedom to explore the rest of the beach, check out the rest of Playa Grande or nearby town of Tamarindo, or just relax in a hammock with a good book. Practice Spanish with our friendly staff or toss a Frisbee around on the beach with another guest. Take out a boogie board to ride the waves in a different way – the ways to pass the time and relax here are endless. At night, take in the beautiful sunset before enjoying dinner at one of the local restaurants. From freshly cooked Costa Rican dishes to familiar foods like pizzas, you certainly won’t go hungry while you are here. Often PGSC puts on big BBQs for all the guests too. We can accommodate vegetarians as easily as those that love a good cheeseburger.

Our Surf Camp:

All types of travelers, from backpackers to couples to families have enjoyed staying at the camp. However, the majority of our guests are young travelers, and we get quite the mix of surfers and non-surfers.  PGSC also has two dogs, both of which usually become guest favorites by the end of their trips.

We welcome you to a total of 5 cabanas. There are three private cabinas (sleeps up to 2) with air-conditioning as well as 2 dormitory-style pilotis (sleeps up to 4) with ceiling fans and porches with hammocks. There is also a guest kitchen, a BBQ, and two communal bathrooms. We have an inviting pool, plenty of hammocks, and many surfboards to rent. PGSC has Wi-Fi for your convenience. Mosquito nets are included, as are linens and towels. We also offer a laundry service and private parking.

The Playa Grande Vibe:

The vibe in Playa Grande is relaxed. Everything you need from shops, to supermarkets, to restaurants  are all within walking distance. The neighboring town of Tamarindo has additional restaurants, bars, and shops. Getting to Tamarindo during the day is easy – all you do is take a water taxi across the nearby estuary, and you’re there. Boat tours of the estuary tours are also available, where you can see a wide assortment of wildlife. Be sure to bring your camera!

At night, people usually relax around the pool with a drink or two or head to one of the local restaurants. Tamarindo’s close location offers a more active night-life, and we can help arrange transport there. The Surf Camp provides a quiet, comfortable and tranquil setting. Surrounded by breath taking scenery, incredible sunsets and diverse wildlife on the land and in the sea, it is the perfect place to learn how to surf and experience a new culture.
