Volcanic Islands 700 miles out to the sea and directly on the equator, in the path of north swells from the Gulf of Alaska and south swells from the Southern Ocean.
This is island-style surf! Because the Galapagos Islands are volcanic, this is the land of lava rock reefs and points, not beach breaks and sand points. The Islands are geologically young and famed for their vast number of endemic species, which were studied by Charles Darwin during the voyage of the Beagle. His observations and collections contributed to the inception of Darwin's theory of evolution by natural selection
The Galapagos Islands:
Your perfect surf trip is guaranteed in the Galapagos islands, surrounded of beautiful landscapes and almost untouched nature which has given the Galapagos the award of Patrimonio Natural de la Humanidad. The Galapagos put the 'wild' into 'wild life'. Out there, on the equator, where cold and warm water currents meet and species have thrived and evolved in abundance, nature is large and in charge and no matter where you go, you are in the middle of it.
Tired of surfing 2 perfect sessions daily? There is no place with better snorkeling than the Galapagos, and you'll find 50+ feet of visibility and lots to see at Leon Dormido and Isolate de Lobos. Just be careful to leave the reefed and the ocean as you see it, as just about everything is protected out here. You will find nature almost untouched. Playful sea-lions, and big Rays swim past. It is the best live aquarium in the world.
The Surfing:
Our Xoxxi surf vacations are made by surfers for surfers with heart and passion. San Cristobal receives swell from both the north and south of the world. It becomes more and more a favorite destination for people searching good quality waves without the crowds.
It was through observing the unique and diverse wildlife of the Galapagos Islands that led Charles Darwin to come up with the theory of evolution. These 17 isolated, oceanic oases have been declared a national park and even today, only 5 of the islands are inhabited. The archipelago is the result of fairly recent volcanic surges from the sea floor that remain very active, particularly Isabela Island. The coastal fringe is made up of lava reefs and boulders, because the water is too cold for coral formation. The predominant S-SE trade winds mean that the most consistent good quality spots are to be found on the north facing shores.
